It's finally here! Opening Day for the St. Louis Cardinals is tomorrow against the Rockies. Like I say every year, it's been a long winter and baseball couldn't get here fast enough. So, this blog will be all things baseball.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.-- Earl Weaver
This week WGN has been playing baseball movies at night leading up to Opening Day. For those of you who don't know, WGN is the Cubs t.v. station. The movies they selected weren't my favorites but it gave me something to watch so I didn't have to watch basketball.
My top 5 favorite baseball movies of all time are...
5. The Rookie
4. Benchwarmers
3. Sandlot
2. League of Their Own
And my favorite baseball movie is...
1. Eight Men Out
I come from a long line of baseball players. My grandfather was asked by the St. Louis Cardinals to come try-out but my grandmother told him no because, "You just returned from the war and you are not leaving me here with our baby." To hear the stories about my grandfather and the way he batted. My brother actually has my grandfathers bat and I have no idea how we ever got the bat through the strike zone because it is so heavy. Once, my great grandmother come to Memphis to see my grandfather play ball. My grandfather hit a tripple and my great grandmother leans over to my grandmother and says, "John ought not hit the ball so far and make those poor men run after it like he does."
My dad was a catcher and I've heard stories about how great a catcher he was. I was home visiting a couple years ago and ran into one of the coaches that dad played AGAINST. The coach asked me if I knew how good my dad was and I just said, "I've heard stories." He points his finger at me and with his hand on my shoulder tells me, "I've coached against your dad and let me tell you how good he was." The coach proceeds to tell me that on his team batting 1 and 2 were 2 members of the Germantown track team who won the State Championship in the relays the previous year (and who would win it again this particular year). Dad was a catcher. The first batter gets on base and tries to steal 2nd - naturally dad threw him out. The next batter got on base and tried to steal 2nd base as well. Dad threw him out. The coach's wife yells at him, "Stop sending runners. Martin is going to throw them all out." The coach called time out, walked over to my dad's coach and said, "Tell Martin I'm not going to send any more runners the rest of the game." The coach kept his word.
The baseball coach at my high school was asked "In your 20 plus years of coaching baseball who is the best shortshop you've seen." His response was "Kevin Woods." I've always said that but i'm also a bit biased. Kevin had incredible hands and incredible range and an incredible arm. When he batted, he had the best eye which sometimes worked against him. Kevin went to school on a baseball scholarship but came home after one year and began coaching at our high school.
I love going to baseball games especially with my dad. He still teaches me so much about the game. Dad and I can talk baseball for hours and I love it. Mom has always told us that if the house were to ever catch on fire that we had to grab all the photo albums and videos that we could. Dad always told us that if the house were to catch on fire to carry out all the autographed baseballs we could. You see, at our house we have a Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Ted Williams, Ozzie Smith, Pujols and many many more autographed baseballs and probably close to 60,000 baseball cards.
Baseball is in my blood.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. - Field of Dreams

That is a pretty good list....but HOW COULD YOUR LEAVE OUT BULL DURHAM?? You've got the Benchwarmers on there right where Meat and Crash are supposed to be!! Madonna and Rosie O in a baseball movie?? HA! The only thing that made ALOTO watchable was Tom Hanks. That spot is reserved for Lou, Willie Mays Hayes, Dorn, Wild Thing, Jake, and Pedro!! How dare you leave Major League off your list. The estrogen must have clouded your memory. You're top pick is suspect as well. We all love some baseball history, but missed the best baseball movie of all time and you even QUOTED from it....."If you build it, they will come"....Eight Men Out was good, but it doesn't scratch the top 5. I'm obviously going to have to re-order this list for you, set you on the path of righteousness...so here it is:
5. The Rookie
4. The Sandlot
3. Major League
2. Bull Durham
and finally...
1. Field of Dreams
I hope in time and with much prayer and fasting, you'll come along side of me in unity and agreement. Bless your heart....
Poppa
Now that I think about it...the baseball game in Chicken Little was more entertaining than "A League of Their Own"!! Geena Davis is like...7 1/2 feet tall...just a shade taller than Randy Johnson. Creepy....
I'd rather stare at Peter Gammons gnarled teeth for 128 minutes than listen to Rosie say "Okay, let's make like a bread truck and haul buns ladies", ever again!!
Benjamin,
The only good part of Field of Dreams is when they old ballplayers are actually playing. Which team is it that is playing on Ray's field? The "Black Sox" and my #1 film is on which team..."The Black Sox." I'd rather watch an entire movie on Shoeless Joe and Bucky Weaver than 1.5 hours of Ray hearing voices. Field of Dreams moves too slow for me.
Bull Durham should probably be in my top 5 and at one point it was but having to watch Kevin Costner again keeps Bull Durham out of my top 5. Don't forget that breathing out of your eyelids is very important, you always need a rooster in the dugout to take curses off infielder's gloves, and candlesticks always make a great wedding present.
Major League should be in my top 5 but i ran out of numbers. It can share a spot with Benchwarmers. Juuuussssttt a bit outside. Speaking of Pedro, will Pedro be ready for the Kentucky Derby? Have you checked on him lately?
Tom Hanks absolutely made ALOTO. I love Tom Hanks! Let's not go to the world series without Stillwell's toys! Ballplayer, I don't have ballplayers, I have girls. Use your head. That's that lump three feet above your a*s.
I'd rather watch a commie kickball game than have to watch A Field of Dreams.
I'm suprised you didn't have "Angels in the Outfield" or "Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch" on your list....."A League of Their Own".....Phooey!!
I take back my last comment. I would rather watch Ray convince his wife to plow over their cash crop, kidnap Terrance Mann with his "finger gun," Doc save Ray's daughter as she is choking on a hot dog than watch a low scoring, everyone running around kicking everyone in the shins commie kickball game.
Hey, you know what it's like to save someone's life who is choking don't you?
Let's not forget Rookie of the Year or Mr. Baseball...
HE BUILT IT!!! THEY CAME!!! It's GOLD!!
Or Mr. 3000!!
IT'S CRAP!
Brendan Fraser in "The Scout"...now that's cinema!!
I'd be more impressed if he built a nice minor league ballpark. All he built was a church field.
That was a nice field!! Corn for a warning track/fence...enough bleachers for tens and tens of people...
I bet you cried during "The Pride of St Louis"...
I am ashamed....I totally forgot about my man....Roy Hobbs. That easily takes "The Rookie" off my list. As a matter of fact, it also pushes "The Sandlot" to #5!! SOrry Roy...You're my BOY!!
"The Natural" of course...Did I have to say it?
HOW COULD WE FORGET ABOUT JOEY!!
(LeBlanc) in his most challenging role yet as Jack Cooper, playing opposite a Chimpanzee in the blockbuster "Ed"...wow...
Suck it up Ben... there's no crying in baseball!!
And I finally it strangely ironic that Leslie, the biggest baseball fan I've ever known, finds "Field of Dreams" too slow... hellllllllo?
PS- Biscuits start this weekend... come on down so you don't miss out on all of the fun!
The Biscuits!! I love that team name. Leave it to my Rays to come up with that!!
Oh...by the way...did anyone notice that the Rays were in 1st place through out spring training? over .700 winning percentage...WHAT!?! This is the year we beat everyone....OK, well Baltimore, and Toronto...and we'll take more than a few from NY and Beantown! LETS GO RAYS!!!
I cried during The Pride of St. Louis and The Rookie
Benjamin,
The only thing good about The Natural is when he busts the crap out of the baseball but Benny "The "Jet" Rodriquez does that and pickles the beast in Sandlot (plus there is more baseball playing in Sandlot) so that trumps The Natural.
Judy, my dear Judy, the more baseball playing that is in a movie the more I like it. Field of Dreams had minimal ball playing in the movie, thus it was too slow for me.
I'm surprised that The Rookie isn't in your top five since the team he plays for is The Devil Rays!! I hope the Rays beat the crap out of Toronto's third cry baby third baseman!!
Excuse me...what is this...2006? You may now refer to my home team as "the Tampa Bay Rays" or affectionately as "The Rays".
Now as to the matter of baseball played in the movie, that has no real bearing on the quality of the picture. The Natural is a perfect example. We all know who is going to win in the end, right? It's no real suprise. BUT, if the back story sux, then you don't really CARE if the good guys win in the big game, in the bottom of the 9th, go ahead runner on 2nd....tension builds...Roy is oozing blood from his recent gunshot wound...Swings thru a steaming fastball, but crushes the snot out of the ball on the next pitch....back....back...back....BOOM!!!
The ball destroys the sodium-arc light tree in right field setting off a chain reaction that highlights the triumphant trot around the bags to score the winning run...WOO HOO!! That's why you care about Roy, because you've spent some time with him. Come ON Les!!
Scott Rolen Sux!!
anyone who would ask to leave St. Louis and move to Canada is a cry baby.
I like your profile pic of the Biscuits.
There is never a good reason to watch rosie odonnell (aloto) or susan "the commie" sarandon and her pinko husband whose name shall not be mentioned (crap durham) (small caps intended!). Those movies should be excluded as a matter of patriotism and even moderately good taste!
And why are we talking baseball, there is still plenty of relevant sports going on such as Hockey, a real sport for real men, or even Nascar which people seem to actually notice prior to October. Write about baseball in October when people actually notice it!
Ben~ AWESOME profile pic :)
Lester~ I know, and you're still my favourite...
Toronto~ still gotta love 'em... best hotdogs EVER in that stadium {after all, I DID go there for my bachlorette party..}
Mark~ Oh no you didn'!!!
**except we're really still watching hockey... playoffs... hello people?
and where in the world is beantown?
ummmm......Boston is bean town....Boston Baked Beans....hullo?
I'll start watching hockey again in the last 4 weeks. My Lightning are absolutely TERRIBLE. Biggest waste of talent in the league...THey had Vinny, Marty and Brad and coudn't do SQUAT!! I'm so embarassed to play in the south. This was the division to beat a few years ago, and now it's dead last.
Go Leafs Go!!...wait...are there any professional hockey teams left in Canada?
Go Biscuits Go!!
Judy! Beantown is where the Green Monster is located.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
Any talk of hockey, soccer, football, pool, underwater basket weaving etc will not be tolerated.
Don't make me delete your comments.
I'll let the previously posted comments stay but consider this your warning. Feel free to smack talk Scott Rolen!
sOrry...
